Or maybe you don't even know how to use microcontrollers, you just want to make a sound play whenever you press a button. What about something that has to be very small and portable? You are probably feeling a little frustrated: it's been very hard to find a simple, low cost audio effects trigger that is easy to use and does not require any programming

UNTIL NOW!

Don't get me wrong, I love the MP3 Music Maker shield and the Audio FX Sound Board + 2x2W Amp. And our Wave Shield is a dependable classic. But you either need an Arduino or they might be a little too big and powerful for your needs. So after a lot of engineering and tinkering we've come out with the Adafruit MINI Sound Board, the fastest way to add audio effects to a project, with a small footprint. We think this is the best sound board for props and costumes!

The sound board is designed to be simple: it does not have polyphonic ability, can't play MP3's (MP3 is patented and costs $ to license, so this board uses the similar but not-patented OGG format, there are tons of free converters that will turn an MP3 into OGG), isn't reprogrammable or scriptable, and you can't have any other kind of trigger type. However, there's a good chance the project you want to make will work great.

We designed this board specifically for people who wanted to make props, costumes, toys, and other small portable projects. That means you can drive 2–4 solenoids (only two can be active at a time, on opposite bridges), two DC motors bi-directionally, or one stepper motor. Just make sure they're good for 1.2 Amp or less of current, since that's the limit of this chip. They do handle a peak of 3A, but that's just for a short amount of time, like 20 milliseconds. What we like most about this particular driver is that it comes with built-in kick-back diodes internally so you don't have to worry about the inductive kick damaging your project or driver!

There are two digital inputs per H-bridge (one for each half of the bridge) as well as a PWM input per driver so you can control motor speed. This boost converter chip has some really nice extras such as low battery detection, 2A internal switch, synchronous conversion, excellent efficiency, and 700KHz high-frequency operation.

To make this even more useful, we stuck a smart load-sharing Lipoly charger on the other side. The charger circuitry is powered from a microUSB jack, and will recharge any 3.7V/4.2V LiIon or LiPoly battery at 1000mA max rate. There are two LEDs for monitoring the charge rate, a yellow one tells you it's working, a green one lights up when it's done.

Since the built-in battery charger has load-sharing, it will automatically switch over to the USB power when available, instead of continuously charging/draining the battery. This is more efficient, and lets you charge-and-boost at the same time without any interruption on the output, so it's fine for use as a "UPS" (uninterruptible power supply). Please note that this board is designed to be used only with a LiPoly attached, it won't work without a battery.

Just be aware that the charge rate is 1000mA max, and there's some inefficiency during the boosting stage, so make super sure that the USB adapter you're using to charge with is high quality, can supply 2A and has thick power wires. This one from Adafruit is ideal and has been tested, lower quality ones will not act well due to the voltage drop on the wires or droop on the power supply. This is especially true if you're actually drawing 1000mA out of the PowerBoost 1000C, the MCP73871 maxes out at 1.8A. You do have to always have a LiPo plugged into manage the load spikes, it's not optional!

This charger-booster is great for powering your robot, Arduino project, single-board-computer such as Raspberry Pi or BeagleBone! One 33' roll of thermal paper is also included! The printer uses very common 2.25" wide thermal paper, and it can fit up to 33 ft of paper in the bay at once with a diameter of ≤ 30mm. The 33' long, 2.25" wide Thermal Paper Roll in our store works perfectly!

We have quite a few sizes of embeddable thermal printers, larger ones can hold more paper in the bay, but are of course larger. This version features Natural White RGBW LEDs, combining red, green, blue, and a dedicated white channel for more balanced and versatile lighting. The Jewel is also available in Warm White, Cool White, and classic RGB variants.

Each NeoPixel is “split” into two sections: the familiar RGB LED, and a white LED with a yellow phosphor. When unlit, it resembles an egg yolk; when powered, it delivers extremely bright output with 8-bit PWM control per channel, providing 32-bit colour depth per LED. This makes it ideal for projects that need vivid colour effects alongside clean white illumination.

Seven 5050-sized (5 × 5 mm) smart RGBW NeoPixels are mounted on a beautifully round PCB with mounting holes and a fully chainable layout. Despite its compact size, the Jewel can be expanded easily — multiple boards can be linked together and controlled from a single microcontroller pin. Each LED includes an integrated driver chip with approximately 18 mA constant-current drive, ensuring consistent colour even if the supply voltage varies. No external resistors are required, keeping designs neat and simple. Power is supplied at 5 V DC, with a supported range of 4–7 V.

NeoPixels use an 800 kHz single-wire protocol, which requires precise timing. The built-in PWM runs at around 400 Hz, which works well for most applications, though some flicker may be visible if the LEDs are moving. For applications requiring smoother motion, DotStar LEDs offer a higher PWM rate.

The Jewel boards are fully chainable, with data passed from one board to the next over a single data line. Because the protocol is timing-sensitive, a real-time microcontroller is required, such as an AVR, Arduino, PIC, or mbed. Linux-based systems and interpreted microcontrollers are not suitable. An 8 MHz or faster processor is recommended. The LEDs are supported by the Adafruit NeoPixel Arduino library, with additional ports available for other platforms.

Each unit is supplied as a fully assembled and tested round PCB with 7 individually addressable RGBW LEDs, ready to add elegant lighting to your project.

Specifications

Diameter: 22.95mm

Weight: 1.4g

May ship either WS2812B or SK6812-based LEDs. Most WiFi, Bluetooth®, Zigbee and other wireless chipsets use 2.4GHz, which is great for high speed transfers. This motor driver chip is a nice alternative to the TB6612 driver. Like that chip, you get 2 full H-bridges, but this chip is better for low voltage uses (can run from 2.7V up to 10.8V motor power) and has built in current limiting capability. We set it up for 1A current limiting so you don't get more than 2A per chip, but you can also disable the current limiting, or change it to a different limit!

We solder on DRV8833 onto a breakout board for you here, with a polarity protection FET on the motor voltage input. Each breakout chip contains two full H-bridges (four half H-bridges). That means you can drive two DC motors bi-directionally, or one stepper motor. Just make sure they're good for about 1.2 Amp or less of current, since that's the limit of this chip. They do handle a peak of 2A but that's just for a short amount of time, if you turn off the current limiting we set. What we like most about this particular driver is that it comes with built in kick-back diodes internally so you dont have to worry about the inductive kick damaging your project or driver! You also don't have to worry as much about burning out the chip with overdriving since there is current limiting.

There's two digital inputs per H-bridge (one for each half of the bridge), you can PWM one of the inputs to control motor speed. Runs at 2.7V-10.8V logic/motor power. The motor voltage is the same as the logic voltage, but logic voltage from 2.7V or greater will work so no need to worry if you are powering the motors from 9V and using 3.3V logic. Each segment has a click-y feeling to it, and each movement clockwise or counter-clockwise causes the two switches to open and close. This makes the solenoid able to pull (from one end) or push (from the other)

This solenoid in particular is fairly small, with a 30mm long body and a 'captive' armature with a return spring. Many lower cost solenoids are only push type or only pull type and may not have a captive armature (it'll fall out!) or don't have a return spring. Now it can! This breakout board features the easy-to-use MCP4725 12-bit DAC. Control it via I2C and send it the value you want it to output, and the VOUT pin will have it. Great for audio / analog projects, such as when you can't use PWM but need a sine wave or adjustable bias point.

We break out the ADDR/A0 pin so you can connect two of these DACs on one I2C bus, just tie that pin of one high to keep it from conflicting. Also included is a 6-pin header, for use in a breadboard. Works with both 3.3V or 5V logic.

Some nice extras with this chip: for chips that have 3.4Mbps Fast Mode I2C (Arduino's don't) you can update the Vout at ~200 KHz. There's an EEPROM so if you write the output voltage, you can 'store it' so if the device is power cycled it will restore that voltage. The output voltage is rail-to-rail and proportional to the power pin so if you run it from 3.3V, the output range is 0-3.3V. If you run it from 5V the output range is 0-5V.

We have an easy-to-use Arduino library and tutorial with a triangle-wave and sine-wave output example that can be used with any 'duino or ported to any microcontroller with I2C host. Wiring it up is easy - connect VDD to your microcontroller power pin (3-5V), GND to ground, SDA to I2C Data (on the Arduino Uno, this is A4 on the Mega it is 20 and on the Leonardo digital 2), SCL to I2C Clock(on the Arduino Uno, this is A5 on the Mega it is 21 and on the Leonardo digital 3) and listen on VOUT.

Technical Details

Datasheet, Fritzing, and EagleCAD PCB files available in the product tutorial

This board/chip uses I2C 7-bit address, you can use 0x62 or 0x63

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0824/8318/3834/files/mcp4725-breakout-board---12-bit-dac-wi2c-interface_1.jpg?v=1789676319
rugged-metal-onoff-switch-with-blue-led-ring-16mm-blue-onoff
Rugged Metal On/Off Switch with Blue LED Ring (16mm Blue On/Off)

These chrome-plated metal buttons are rugged and look real good while doing it!

Simply drill a 16mm hole into any material up to 1/2" thick and you can fit these in place, there's even a rubber gasket to keep water out of the enclosure.

On the front of the button is a flat metal actuator, surrounded by a blue plastic LED ring.

On the back there are 3 contacts for the button (common, normally-open and normally-closed) and 2 contacts for the blue LED ring (+ and -).

Connect 3 to 6V to the LED to have it light up nicely, there's a built-in resistor! This uni-polar motor has a built in mounting plate with two mounting holes. There are only 32 step (11.25 degree) per revolution, and inside is a 1/16 reduction gear set. (Actually its 1/16.032 but for most purposes 1/16 is a good enough approximation) What this means is that there are really 32*16.032 steps per revolution = 513 steps! The shaft is flattened so its easy to attach stuff to it with a set-screw. A perfect first stepper motor and works well with the Motor Shield for Arduino.

The gearing has a few side effects which are important to note. First, you can turn the stepper by hand but not as smoothly as an un-geared stepper. It also means you shouldn't use interleaved or micro-stepping to control or it will take forever to turn. Instead use single or double stepping. The torque is fairly high but its slower than un-geared steppers - we maxed out at about 50 RPM by over-driving it a bit with 9VDC. If you want to connect to our Ultimate GPS V3 module, be sure to pick up a uFL to SMA adapter!

GPS not included.

Technical Details

All technical specifications including dimensions are in the datasheet

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0824/8318/3834/files/gps-antenna---external-active-antenna---3-5v-28db-5-meter-sma_1.jpg?v=1789676363
stereo-37w-class-d-audio-amplifier-max98306
Stereo 3.7W Class D Audio Amplifier - MAX98306

This incredibly small stereo amplifier is surprisingly powerful - able to deliver 2 x 3.7W channels into 3 ohm impedance speakers. Inside the miniature chip is a class D controller, able to run from 2.7V-5.5VDC. Since the amp is a class D, its incredibly efficient (over 90% efficient when driving an 8Ω speaker at over a Watt) - making it perfect for portable and battery-powered projects. It has built-in thermal and over-current protection, but we could barely tell it got hot. This board is a welcome upgrade to basic "LM386" amps!

The amplifier inputs go through 1.0uF capacitors, so they are fully 'differential' - if you don't have differential outputs, simply tie the R- and L- to the ground. The outputs are "Bridge Tied" - which means they connect directly to the outputs, with no connection to the ground. The output is a 360KHz square wave PWM that is then 'averaged out' by the speaker coil - the high frequencies are not heard. All the above means that you can't connect the output to another amplifier, it should drive the speakers directly.

Comes with a fully assembled and tested breakout board with 1.0uF input capacitors. We also include a header to plug it into a breadboard, pre-soldered 3.5mm screw-terminal blocks so you can easily attach/detach your speakers, a pre-soldered 2x4 header, and a jumper to change the amplifier gain on the fly. You will be ready to rock in 15 minutes!
